Matthew has been a Director at Grant Smith Law Practice since 2018, joining the firm following a merger with his previous practice.

Born and raised in Elgin, Matthew trained with a large multinational firm in Aberdeen before qualifying as a solicitor in 2010. Upon qualification, he returned to Elgin, where he has specialised in criminal defence ever since. He regularly appears in courts across the North of Scotland, building extensive experience in Sheriff and Jury, Sheriff Court, and Justice of the Peace Courts. In addition, he frequently acts as instructing solicitor in High Court cases, working alongside trusted and experienced Counsel. Matthew is registered with the Scottish Legal Aid Board to provide Criminal Legal Aid where clients are eligible.

Having previously run his own firm and now heading up our Elgin office, Matthew also brings experience in a range of other areas, including conveyancing, wills, and powers of attorney.

Alongside his duties with the firm, Matthew was appointed to the Legal Aid Committee of the Law Society of Scotland in 2025. In this role, he contributes to discussions with the Scottish Legal Aid Board, Scottish Government, and other relevant organisations on Legal Aid matters.

Outside of work, Matthew enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid golfer, regularly competing in local and regional events.
